What Our Clients Say

Testimonials

Ron Fearing

Solid Rock Masonry (SRM) goes above and beyond what’s necessary to ensure that the homeowner is happy with their custom built stove. I was able to approach Eric with a possible design that would allow for a “heat exchanger” to be tied into my in floor heat.

Andrew Koenig

Eric and his team built an Austrian style Kachelofen for my new house. The workmanship was great, the design was well executed and we did not exceed the budget that we spoke about prior to the build. They worked long hours to complete the project on time.

Mike Luhrsen

Solid Rock Masonry built a large stone fireplace and stone entry pillars for our new home. They were very knowledgeable about the technical requirements of the fireplace and did a very high quality job. Laying smooth native stone in an aesthetically pleasing manner takes a special talent and they did it well.

Cameron Fuess

I had Eric at Solid Rock Masonry design and install a custom heater in my new construction house. He did the design at his shop in Duluth, then spent the week at my place building it. He did a great job, and we are extremely happy with the heater and his service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What areas does Solid Rock Masonry serve?

Solid Rock Masonry is based in Duluth, MN, and serves clients throughout northern Minnesota, the Iron Range, Ely, Tower, the North Shore and northwestern Wisconsin. We regularly travel for large projects and masonry heater installations across the Upper Midwest. Contact us to discuss your project location.

How much does a custom stone fireplace or masonry heater cost?

Custom stone fireplace projects typically start around $15,000 and vary based on stone type, size, and design complexity. Custom masonry heaters generally range from $20,000 to $45,000+ depending on the design, materials, and features like bake ovens or heated benches. Tulikivi soapstone installations range from $15,000 to $35,000+ including the unit and professional installation. Every project is unique, so we provide detailed written estimates after an initial consultation.

What is a masonry heater, and how is it different from a wood stove?

A masonry heater is a high-efficiency wood burning heating system built from brick, stone, or soapstone that stores heat in its thermal mass and radiates warmth for 12 to 24 hours after a single fire. Unlike a conventional wood stove that must burn continuously to produce heat, a masonry heater burns one hot, clean fire and then slowly releases stored heat throughout the day. Masonry heaters operate at 80–90% efficiency compared to 50–70% for most wood stoves, and they produce far fewer emissions.
